Inelastic Dark Matter ∗

چکیده

Many observations suggest that much of the matter of the universe is nonbaryonic. Recently, the DAMA NaI dark matter direct detection experiment reported an annual modulation in their event rate consistent with a WIMP relic. However, the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search (CDMS) Ge experiment excludes most of the region preferred by DAMA. We demonstrate that if the dark matter can only scatter by making a transition to a slightly heavier state (∆m ∼ 100keV), the experiments are no longer in conflict. Moreover, differences in the energy spectrum of nuclear recoil events could distinguish such a scenario from the standard WIMP scenario. Finally, we discuss the sneutrino as a candidate for inelastic dark matter in supersymmetric theories. ∗This work was supported in part by the U.S. Department of Energy under Contracts DE-AC0376SF00098, in part by the National Science Foundation under grant PHY-95-14797.

Inelastic Dark Matter at DAMA, CDMS and Future Experiments

The DAMA annual modulation signature, interpreted as evidence for a spin-independent WIMP coupling, seems in conflict with null results from CDMS. However, in models of “inelastic dark matter”, the experiments are compatible. Inelastic dark matter can arise in supersymmetric theories as the real component of a sneutrino mixed with a singlet scalar. In contrast with ordinary sneutrino dark matte...

Self-scattering for Dark Matter with an excited state

Self-interacting dark matter scenarios have recently attracted much attention, as a possible means to alleviate the tension between N-body simulations and observations of the dark matter distribution on galactic and sub-galactic scales. The presence of internal structure for the dark matter — for example, a nearly-degenerate state in the spectrum that could decay, or be collisionally excited or...

Halo-independent methods for inelastic dark matter scattering

We present halo-independent methods to analyze the results of dark matter direct detection experiments assuming inelastic scattering. We focus on the annual modulation signal reported by DAMA/LIBRA and present three different halo-independent tests. First, we compare it to the upper limit on the unmodulated rate from XENON100 using (a) the trivial requirement that the amplitude of the annual mo...

Search for Ambient Neutralino Dark Matter at Accelerator

We investigate the possibility of using accelarator beam particles to collide with the ambient neutralino dark matter particles in cosmic rays as a way to search for the cold dark matter. We study in detail its inelastic and elastic scattering with the projectile particles at electron-positron colliders and discuss the possible experimental signals and the relevent background. There is strong e...

Atomic Dark Matter

We propose that dark matter is dominantly comprised of atomic bound states. We build a simple model and map the parameter space that results in the early universe formation of hydrogen-like dark atoms. We find that atomic dark matter has interesting implications for cosmology as well as direct detection: Protohalo formation can be suppressed below Mproto ∼ 10 − 106M⊙ for weak scale dark matter ...
